TMJ and Headaches in Children: What’s the Connection?

Is your child suffering from headaches, migraines, jaw pain, or a throbbing ache in and around their ear? What many people suffering from headaches or migraines do not know is that their child’s head pain could possibly be caused by the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ). Oftentimes, people never consider TMJ as a possible cause for their child’s pain leading to frequent misdiagnosis of the pain.

Here’s what happens when the TMJ comes out of alignment; it quickly causes the muscles in your face, head, and neck to strain with every movement. Even while you are asleep your muscles are working harder than normal to try to become “realigned” and the constant strain or contraction can quickly cause headaches or tension migraines.

Often what is found is that migraine headaches can be triggered by problems with the patients’ jaw joints (TMJ). One symptom that many migraine sufferers may be unaware that they are doing is grinding their teeth or clenching their jaw during sleep or throughout the day. These symptoms often aggravate a key nerve center that can trigger migraine headaches.

There are other symptoms of TMJ Jaw Pain that can lead to your child’s headaches that include jaw clicking and popping, earaches, popping sounds in the ears, stiff or sore jaw muscles, locking of the joint, pain in the temple area and pain in the jaw joint. Getting a thorough examination to diagnosis if your child has a TMJ disorder is vital to helping to relieve your child’s pain.
